the irish of
isham street
Set in the 1950's amidst the teeming Irish and Catholic cultures of New York City, this coming-of-age story is about a young girl from an Irish Catholic immigrant family who encounters colorful characters and rich experiences in her unfolding world.
The innocent child, living in a spiritual euphoria, puts together everything she's been told about the world into unique perceptions and outrageous incidents of ordinary life.
The child imitates her mother, "If ever ye fell into that dirty, filthy river, ye'd be crippled for life". Meanwhile, we discover that her brother swims in the Hudson every day and the child feels she would swim there too, if she were old enough and if she were a boy. Both children justify disobeying the mother's warnings to stay away from the river- "it just gets too hot to obey."
The young child tries to make sense of what the nuns and priests have been teaching her about heaven, hell, and purgatory. Terrified that she’s a sinner who will burn in hell, she strategizes about how to get into heaven.
